Paraguay declared independence at Casa de la Independencia in 1811—making this modest colonial house one of South America's most important revolutionary sites. The building sits in central Asunción, where thick adobe walls and terracotta tiles transport you back to the country's founding moment. Revolutionary leaders gathered in these same rooms to plan their uprising against Spanish rule. Asunción surprises most visitors.
